The Journal of Resilient Urbanism & Sustainable Design (JRUSD; eISSN 3067-6029) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal committed to advancing research and professional discourse in resilient urbanism, sustainable urban and architectural design, spatial planning, climate adaptation, infrastructure resilience, and equitable urban transformation.
JRUSD provides an interdisciplinary forum for academics, practitioners, designers, planners, and policymakers to exchange knowledge and disseminate research contributing to adaptive, inclusive, and sustainable urban futures.
All articles are published on an open-access basis. The journal does not currently charge Article Processing Charges (APCs), submission fees, or publication fees, supporting equitable access for authors and readers worldwide.
JRUSD is independently published in the United States under the publishing name Journal of Resilient Urbanism & Sustainable Design. Publishing administration, editorial operations, and official correspondence are coordinated by the JRUSD Editorial Office in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Journal of Resilient Urbanism & Sustainable Design (JRUSD; eISSN 3067-6029) is an independently published, non-commercial, online scholarly journal based in the United States.

Publishing and administrative activities are coordinated by the JRUSD Editorial Office. The journal’s publishing administration is responsible for production coordination, website management, digital preservation, publication records, and maintenance of the scholarly record.
The designation “JRUSD Editorial Office” refers to the journal’s administrative and editorial operations and does not represent a separately incorporated legal entity.

Governance and Editorial Independence

JRUSD is governed academically by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board. Editorial decisions, including decisions concerning acceptance, revision, and rejection, are made solely on the basis of scholarly merit, relevance to the journal’s aims and scope, methodological quality, and compliance with the journal’s editorial and ethical policies.
The journal does not permit sponsors, donors, service providers, or other external parties to influence peer review or editorial decisions. Editorial authority remains independent from publishing administration, technical operations, and any financial or external interests.

Scope and Focus

JRUSD publishes rigorous interdisciplinary research on resilient urbanism, sustainable urban and architectural design, spatial planning, climate adaptation, infrastructure resilience, building environmental performance, and equitable urban transformation. The journal welcomes contributions in, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Resilient Urbanism & Spatial Planning—Urban and regional resilience, sustainable spatial planning, urban morphology, spatial networks, accessibility, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and equitable urban transformation.
  • Sustainable Architecture & Urban Design—Climate-responsive architecture, sustainable building and urban design, adaptive reuse, low-carbon development, placemaking, and resilient urban form.
  • Building Energy & Environmental Performance—Energy efficiency, passive and low-energy design, building-envelope performance, renewable energy integration, building simulation, operational and embodied carbon, indoor environmental quality, thermal comfort, daylighting, ventilation, acoustics, and post-occupancy evaluation.
  • Climate-Resilient Infrastructure & Mobility—Adaptive infrastructure, flood and heat resilience, sustainable mobility, smart urban systems, infrastructure risk assessment, and climate mitigation strategies.
  • Ecological Landscape & Nature-Based Design—Green infrastructure, nature-based solutions, regenerative landscapes, urban biodiversity, water-sensitive design, and climate-responsive public spaces.
  • People, Place & Environmental Well-Being—Relationships between people and the built environment; public-space use; liveability; accessibility; social inclusion; occupant health and well-being; and community resilience.

Research on interior environments is considered where it directly contributes to building resilience, energy or environmental performance, occupant health and well-being, inclusive design, circular material use, or climate adaptation. Submissions focused primarily on decoration, stylistic trends, or commercial product presentation are outside the journal’s scope.

Aim & Contribution

JRUSD fosters interdisciplinary research connecting urban planning, architecture, landscape design, building science, infrastructure, environmental studies, and public policy. The journal seeks to advance knowledge and practice addressing sustainability, climate resilience, building and urban environmental performance, spatial efficiency, and social equity.
The journal encourages the use of established and emerging methodologies, including spatial network analysis, computational urbanism, building performance simulation, digital twin modeling, environmental and energy assessment, post-occupancy evaluation, and socio-environmental data analysis. Contributions should demonstrate clear scholarly, methodological, policy, or professional relevance to the planning, design, performance, and governance of resilient and sustainable built environments.

Publication Format & Audience

The journal welcomes submissions from academics, professionals, urban designers, and policymakers. It publishes:

  • Original Research Articles—Presenting novel theoretical or empirical findings.
  • Technical Papers—Highlighting advancements in urban analytics and planning methodologies.
  • Case Studies—Examining real-world applications of resilient urbanism and sustainability.
  • Critical Reviews—Synthesizing emerging trends and interdisciplinary perspectives.
  • Invited Perspectives—Showcasing insights from leading experts in urban resilience and sustainable design.

Archiving and Digital Preservation

JRUSD is committed to ensuring long-term digital preservation and continued access to its published content. The journal maintains a preservation plan that includes:

  1. PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN/PLN): JRUSD participates in the Public Knowledge Project Preservation Network (PKP PN), a distributed digital preservation service available to eligible journals using Open Journal Systems (OJS). Published issues, article files, supplementary materials, and related metadata are deposited through the PKP PN plugin in OJS. Deposit and preservation status is monitored by the JRUSD Editorial Office through the plugin’s status records.
  2. Platform and content exports: JRUSD is hosted on the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. The Editorial Office performs periodic exports of journal content and metadata (articles, issues, and associated files) to maintain independent copies of the publication record.
  3. Regular backups: The journal performs routine backups of the journal website and database, including article PDFs and supplementary files. Backup copies are stored in more than one secure location to reduce the risk of data loss.
  4. Retention and recovery: Export and backup files are retained for recovery purposes and can be used to restore access in the event of service disruption or platform migration.
  5. Continuity of access: If the journal is no longer published, JRUSD will make reasonable efforts to ensure continued access to its archive through preserved copies (including PKP PN deposits where applicable) and/or deposit in an appropriate institutional or public repository, subject to legal, licensing, and technical constraints.

Revenue Sources and Funding Model

JRUSD operates as a non-commercial, independently published open-access journal. The journal does not charge submission fees or Article Processing Charges (APCs). Journal operations are supported through voluntary academic service by the editorial team and internal administrative coordination. Any institutional or organizational support, if applicable, does not influence editorial decisions. Publishing fees or waiver status do not affect editorial outcomes.

Advertising Policy

JRUSD does not accept advertising and does not display commercial advertisements on its journal website or within published articles. Advertising is not linked in any way to editorial decision-making. Editorial decisions are based solely on scholarly merit and compliance with journal policies.
